Mission and description of the role
This position would be mostly focused on the project Pathways.
Pathways is an open platform that provides insights on the multidimensional vulnerabilities faced by women and children in Low- and Middle Income Countries (LMICs), with the goal of transforming how we design solutions in global health, tailoring better to the realities of the field to enhance their impact, saving more lives.
As a Data Engineer, you will collaborate with a multicultural and multidisciplinary team composed of UI/UX designers, software engineers, data scientists, and data visualization experts.
Your main activities in the team will be to design, develop and maintain the data platform supporting the user-facing applications: public website, data explorer, dashboards, and mobile data collection forms.
Start date: as soon as possible.
Location: Based in Brussels (preferably) but willing to travel to other countries in order to support Bluesquare’s projects. Bluesquare takes into account the safety risks of its employees in the areas concerned.

Role and Responsibilities
Data Engineering & Architecture:
- Design, develop, and maintain ETL pipelines using Python and SQL.
- Deploy and monitor ETL pipelines in a cloud orchestrator.
- Contribute to data architecture and data modeling decisions.
- Integrate data from various sources (including mobile data collection platforms, relational databases, and 3rd party APIs) into analysis-ready data products.
Product development:
- Develop Python packages to support the work of data scientists and data analysts.
- Collaborate with clients and partners on product design and specification including processes, procedures and tools (product roadmap, user manual, training material, etc.).
Quality control:
- Review and automate scripts to ensure quality control of the released data integration work.
Technical writing:
- Write code documentation, users guidelines, articles and other materials that will be useful to communicate with our clients and other partners.
Additional responsibilities
- Contribute to the company visibility/networking on health data systems and Bluesquare visibility (blogs, product descriptions, events)
Our technical stack
You will have to work with the following technologies and software:
- Python or R for data processing (data wrangling, forecasting, operational research, geospatial)
- The Jupyter data science ecosystem
- Data visualisation tools and BI software (Tableau, PowerBI, Superset, Matplotlib, Plotly, Dash,…)
- Our own platforms, such as OpenHexa, Iaso and OpenIMIS
- Industry-standard tools such as DHIS2 and ODK
- Geospatial Software (GDAL, QGIS, Cartographic Rendering Software, etc.)

Profile
Required
- Proven experience in Python software development, with a focus on maintainability
- Good knowledge of SQL and relational databases (PostgreSQL)
- Strong quantitative, analytical and data modeling skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
- Ability to work autonomously
- Team player with good interpersonal skills
Preferred
- Experience with Python testing frameworks
- Hands-on experience with cloud-native DAG orchestrators (Airflow, Dagster)
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes or deployment of containerized applications.
- Proficiency with AWS, Google Cloud, and/or Azure Cloud for data engineering
- Experience and familiarity with practices, software and working environment of CICD, DevOps.
- Experience with time series forecasting, operational research, supply chain, geosciences and machine learning frameworks.
- Experience in Global health, Health financing, Disease Surveillance, Geospatial or Monitoring and Evaluation in another sector a plus
- Working experience in Africa, Asia or Latin America
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in French
