Local deployment of the National Malaria Data Repositories platform in Niger: from project to reality!

Despite sustained efforts to combat malaria, the disease remains one of the leading causes of morbidity in Niger. To strengthen the health response to this public health challenge and to ensure the management of data that had so far been too scattered, the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) and its partners sought the technical assistance of Bluesquare.
Data Fragmentation: a barrier to malaria control
The fragmentation of malaria-related data is among the major obstacles to scaling up interventions against the disease. Data are spread across multiple, non-integrated databases, with different formats, frequencies, and levels of collection (routine, MDO, LMIS, mHealth, LLIN & SMC, entomological surveillance, etc.). This situation makes it difficult to mobilize, aggregate, and analyze strategic information needed to guide decision-making.
Bringing data together to optimize analysis and decision-making
To address this issue, the National Malaria Control Program, together with its partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Global Fund, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Enabel, and others, decided to establish a National Malaria Data Repositories (NMDR). The project was implemented between May 2023 and June 2025 through an iterative process of dialogue and consultation with all stakeholders, including multiple workshops for configuration, validation, training, and feedback.
NMDR makes it possible to pool relevant malaria data, enabling program managers, malaria control officers, and technical and financial partners to access a single portal for malaria-related data within the country.
To ensure nationwide coverage of NMDR, Bluesquare, with funding from Enabel and the Gates Foundation, had the honor of supporting the Directorate of e-Health of the Ministry of Public Health and Hygiene of Niger in organizing a workshop from June 30 to July 5. This workshop focused on the local deployment of the platform on national servers while strengthening the technical capacity of local teams in DHIS2 administration.
Special thanks go to the Technical Committee in charge of implementing NMDR, and congratulations to Mr. Ahmed Mamane Alassane, Director of e-Health, for his leadership, trust, and dedication.
