Epimaps

Epidemiological maps for precision public health

what we do

EpiMaps is an automated epidemiological mapping pipeline that connects directly to national health data systems. It continuously transforms routine data into high-resolution maps that provide up to date information on epidemic risks and health systems preparedness

EpiMaps operationalizes geospatial analysis for routine public health surveillance.

Geospatial analysis for public health is often slow, manual, and ad-hoc—often producing static maps that are outdated not long after they are published. With EpiMaps we want to change this paradigm by shortening the loop between field level data updates and actionable geospatial intelligence.

By automating data ingestion, enrichment, and modeling, EpiMaps enables Ministries of Health and partners to:

EpiMaps turns maps from static reports into living operational tools that support planning, targeting, and rapid response.

Vision

EpiMaps is not a standalone application. It is a modular, automated pipeline designed to sit on top of existing national infrastructure and transform local data into actionable spatial intelligence.

1

National data ingestion

EpiMaps connect directly to specific country data systems to ensure analyses are always based on the most recent information.

  • Routine health data: automated ingestion from national DHIS2 instances, including facility lists, service availability, and routine indicators.
  • Survey and campaign data: integration of granular field data from platforms such as IASO and other data collection tools.
2

Geospatial enrichment

National data is augmented with curated global geospatial datasets, managed automatically within the pipeline.

  • Infrastructure: continuously updated road networks and transport barriers
  • Population and demography: high-resolution settlement and population layers (e.g. WorldPop)
  • Physical geography: elevation, land cover, hydrography, and seasonal constraints
    3

    Epidemiological processing

All data flows through validated epidemiological and accessibility models aligned with WHO guidance.

    • Accessibility modeling: generation of friction surfaces and realistic travel times (walking, driving, cycling), adjusted for terrain, infrastructure quality, and seasonality
    • Disease risk modeling: integration of routine indicators, environmental drivers, and population dynamics to estimate spatial risk
    • Scientific rigor at scale: built on the logic of reference tools such as AccessMod, but redesigned for cloud-native automation and continuous updating
    4

    Core intelligence outputs

EpiMaps generates a suite of continuously updated, decision-ready maps, including:

    • Accessibility and vulnerability maps: estimation of populations living beyond 60 or 120 minutes from essential and emergency health services
    • Measles risk maps: identification of immunity gaps by combining routine immunization coverage, population density, and transmission models
    • Zero-dose children maps: detection of hard-to-reach and unreached communities through triangulation of administrative data and satellite population estimates
    • Sleeping sickness (HAT) targeting: precision identification of priority villages using tsetse habitat suitability and settlement data
    • Performance of key health system functions: diagnostic capacity, drugs availability, cold chain performance or emergency teams mapping, EpiMaps supports the integration of various relevant data sources to support operations planning and monitoring.
    • Malaria incidence maps: contextualized incidence analysis adjusting for testing rates, care-seeking behavior, and environmental drivers
      5

      Built for sovereignty and sustainability

EpiMaps is engineered to respect national ownership and data sovereignty.

      • Flexible deployment: on-premise, national cloud, or hybrid installations
      • Offline-capable processing: suitable for low-connectivity or highly sensitive environments
      • Open standards and transparency: built on OpenHEXA, with auditable code, traceable data lineage, and exportable outputs (GeoTIFF, GeoJSON)
